Stingy finish from Barrington

Barrington's boys basketball team put the clamps on Schaumburg in the second half and pulled away for a 43-29 victory Friday in Barrington.

Barrington allowed just 3 free throws in the fourth quarter. The Broncos' help-side defense limited the Saxons to 0-for-12 shooting from the field in the final period.

"They were getting some good looks," Barrington coach Bryan Tucker said. "The kids off the ball did a nice job coming over to help and challenge the shots."

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as Barrington (11-5, 2-3) took a 20-17 lead into the locker room.

"We were not converting on the offensive end," Tucker said. "And we weren't taking care of the ball very well."

That changed in the second half as the Broncos began to rely on the driving of guard Anthony Spann and the inside play of Jake Parsons.

"I was looking to attack the hoop a lot," Spann said. "Their defense packed it in, but we moved the balk around real well. The team got me some open looks."

With Schaumburg (7-9, 2-3) beginning to focus more on Spann, it opened up the game for Parsons.

"My teammates got me a few open passes," said Parsons, who finished with 12 points. "They opened up yet floor for me and I got some open looks. I was able to attack the basket from there."

Tucker says Parsons, who is a junior, has stepped up in recent weeks.

"He had done a nice job being aggressive and attacking," Tucker said. "He creates some offense not just for himself, but for his teammates."

Barrington led 28-26 with 51 seconds left in the third quarter and then pulled away.

Barrington went on a 8-0 run to open up a 36-26 lead with 3:45 to play on a putback by Jackson Perkins. After a pair of free throws by Schaumburg's Hezekiah Trotter made it 36-28, the Broncos went on 7-1 run to close out the game.

"We couldn't get any separation on them earlier in the game," Tucker said. "But when we were able to get that run in the fourth quarter, things went better. I don't know that they really scored much the rest of the game."

Schaumburg coach Wade Heisler, whose team shot just 23 percent (11-of-47) for the game and converted 3-of-22 shots in the second half, said the poor shooting doomed his team.

"We struggled to put the ball in the basket," Heisler said. "That impacted the game and they won. It is going to be tought to win if we don't score on some of the looks we had tonight."

Spann led Barrington with 14 points while Boock had 10 points thanks to a pair of 3s.

Trotter led Schaumburg with 8 points.
