Schaumburg tops Barrington

Schaumburg's girl basketball team finished the first half of Mid-Suburban West play above .500 by virtue of a 55-46 victory at Barrington on Friday night.

Senior Mallory Gerber led the Saxons (10-9, 3-2) with a game-high 20 points while Laura O'Connell added 12 and Kayla Patterson 9.

Gerber and teammate Regina D'Orazio (6 points) each had a 3-pointer.

Barrington (3-14, 1-4) was led by sophomore guard Tori Meyer's game-high 27 points which included three 3-pointers.

"Tori had a huge game, offensively and defensively," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "Every time we needed a bucket, she found a way I thought she made some nice decisions with the ball and had really had a nice game."

Barreiro also praised the work of junior forward Tess Conforti. "She stepped up for Taylor (Thompson, the Fillies' leading scorer who was sidelined with a concussion). She made her presence known with 5 steals, 2 blocked shots and 6 rebounds. Morgan Kelly also gave us some good minutes off the bench."

"It was good battle the whole game. I thought our kids battled hard. I see improvement in every game. I thought new handled the ball better this game as far as turnovers were concerned."

Fremd 63, Hoffman Estates 26: Fremd (15-4, 5-0) grabbed a 2-game lead in the MSL West as senior Grace Tworek (15 points, 5 rebounds) and classmate Midori Williams (13 points) were top scorers. Freshman Emily Klaczek chipped in 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Hayley Williams had two 3-pointers.

"I thought Grace got us off to a good start," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "She had 15 points in the first 11 minutes of the game She picked up her second foul with 4:30 left in the half and went to the bench."

Anna LaValle and Angie Zara gave the Vikes a lift in the second quarter during a 20-3 run.

"A lot of that (run) was due to their energy and pressure when Grace left the game," Yates said. "We are getting better at our press and we got a number of scores off their turnovers during the second quarter."

Tayler Williams (8 points) and Monraia Wilson (7) led Hoffman Estates (3-15, 1-4).

Hersey 53, Wheeling 42: Visiting Hersey raised its record to 17-2 and 5-0 in the MSL East as Kelly Weyhrich (16 points), Gina Miklasz (10) and Carly Cooper (8) led the way.

Weyhrich and Claire Rogowski each had 3-pointers for Hersey which competes in the 27th annual Subway Classic today.

The Huskies face Marquette High School from Michigan City (Ind.) in the Chicagoland Girls Prep Classic at 6:30 p.m. at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park.

Wheeling (8-9, 2-3) was led by Melissa Claver (15 points) and Nosa Igiehon (11).

Prospect 46, Elk Grove 30: Mandy Withey (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Emily Frasco (8 points) led host Prospect (9-9, 3-2) in the MSL East contest. Margherite Pettenuzzo (7 points) had a 3-pointer for the Knights.

Freshman Megan Murray led Elk Grove with 13 points.

Rolling Meadows 56, Buffalo Grove 43: Rolling Meadows improved 13-6 and 4-1 in the MSL East as seniors Kyra Spiwak (19 points) and Morgan Campagna (15) led the way.

"Our kids responded well in the second half," said Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorsky, whose team led 24-19 at intermission. "Natalie Anderson (5 points, including a 3-pointer) was the difference in the game for us on both ends of the court. Morgan Campagna played well down the stretch."

Buffalo Grove (8-10, 1-4) was led by Kendra Lee (10 points) and Alyssa Floro (8).

Maine West 70, Deerfield 30: Junior forward Jessica Riedl scored a season-high 20 points for Maine West (17-2, 6-0) in the Central Suburban North game.

Alissa Fallon added 13 points with three 3-pointers and Angela Dugalic had 8. Acacia Hernandez converted a 3-pointer for the Warriors.

York 55, St. Viator 42: Juniors Myia Clark had 16 points and Olivia Solimene 11 for St. Viator (9-11) in the nonconference game in Elmhurst.
