Fox Valley Hands of Hope offers free support programs

Fox Valley Hands of Hope is offering a variety of free support programs through April. The mission of this community-based, nonprofit organization is to enhance the quality of life and to provide hope for those experiencing grief or life-threatening illness. All programs will be held at the offices, 200 Whitfield Drive, Geneva. The programs are open to everyone in the community. It is offered free of charge, but registration is required at (630) 232-2233 or info@fvhh.net.

A Hopeful New Year:

New beginnings are just around the corner. This evening is a time for those who have lost a loved one, to come together and reflect on recent holiday experiences while looking forward to a healthy future. Join in a positive evening of sharing from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19. Practical health and wellness tips will be explored to nourish both mind and body. Refreshments will be provided. The program is free, but registration is required. To register, call (630) 232-2233.

Herbie's Friends:

This program helps grieving families cope with loss, grief and death. Herbie's Friends, for families with children ages 5 to 18, creates a safe environment where participants who have experienced a loss can share their thoughts, feelings and stories with others who have had similar experience. They will enjoy a meal together followed by a variety of children's activities including games, art, drama and puppetry, which are used to encourage expression of feelings. The program is set from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 2 to March 2, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 27 S. Edgelawn Drive, Aurora. M.A.L.E.S.:

"Men After a Loss Expressing themselves Safely" is a drop-in group, for men who are grieving the death of a loved one. It meets once a month at the Geneva agency. Grieving can be particularly difficult for men, because they are expected to be strong - a pillar for everyone close to them. M.A.L.E.S. provides a forum where they can "let go" and freely express their thoughts and feelings with other men who are experiencing the same challenges. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided. For more information, call (630) 232-2233. The group meets at 9 a.m. the second Saturday of each month, Feb. 11, March 11 and April 8.

Pathways:

This seven-week group addresses issues faced by those who are grieving the death of a spouse or life partner. Group meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 27 to April 10. Emotional support is offered as well as assistance with accepting the death and coping with grief. Registration with a refundable deposit is required.
