Wheaton North notches another win

Neither team was sharp on the second night of back-to-back games, and Wheaton North made sure Saturday's game stayed dull at the end.

The Falcons swept their weekend DuPage Valley Conference boys basketball matchups by pulling away to a 48-37 victory over Glenbard North in Carol Stream.

Combined with Friday's win over Lake Park, Wheaton North (11-3, 3-2) added to its momentum since dropping its first two DVC games of the season. The Falcons have won seven of their last eight.

"The first two games we lost to (Wheaton Warrenville) South and Naperville North," said Falcons senior guard Ethan Block, who scored 9 points. "It was rough and that really lit a flame under us. We've been determined to be at the place where we know we can be."

By scoring the last 4 points of the third quarter and the first 5 points of the fourth - including a Luke Anthony 3-pointer - Wheaton North stretched a 2-point lead to 39-28 with under five minutes to play. Chamar Flanigan's 3-pointer narrowed the gap to 41-35 for the Panthers (8-7, 2-4) with 2:48 left, but Glenbard North came no closer.

Four-of-fifteen fourth-quarter shooting by the Panthers featured 1-of-7 3-point shooting.

"Defensively, I thought we did some really good things, but we missed some looks and some open shots that we can make," said Glenbard North coach Joe Larson. "I think that was the difference in the ballgame. Defensively, we played well enough to win, but offensively we've got to make some more shots."

Wheaton North burst to an 18-9 first-half lead, but Glenbard North held the Falcons scoreless for the final seven minutes while rallying to tie the game by halftime. A 7-2 run at the start of the third quarter put Wheaton North ahead to stay.

Anthony led all scorers with 12 points and Jack Bennett added 8 points off the bench. Myles Moore paced the Panthers with 10 points. Kibet Chepyator and Adam Jaszka each scored 7 points.

"We did enough to get two wins this weekend," said Wheaton North coach Dave Brackmann. "We certainly still have room for improvement, but conference wins are tough. It was a good, hard-fought game."
