Suburban soccer star Mike Magee retires from MLS
Former Chicago Fire forward Mike Magee announced his retirement from professional soccer Wednesday.
Magee, who grew up in Elmhurst and Long Grove, joined the Fire during the 2013 season and won the Major League Soccer MVP award by scoring 21 goals with 4 assists.
He and the Fire parted ways after the 2015 season, and he rejoined the Galaxy for 2016, scoring 6 goals with 4 assists in 30 appearances.
The 32-year-old won two MLS Cups with the Galaxy over a 14-year career that began with the New York MetroStars, now known as the Red Bulls. He totaled 70 goals and 38 assists.
After leaving Saint Viator at age 15, Magee joined the U.S. Soccer Federation's Bradenton Academy and played for various national teams before he was drafted fourth overall in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by New York.
"I have been fortunate to enjoy an incredible 14-year career in Major League Soccer," Magee said in a statement issued by the Galaxy. "It has been an honor to represent the New York Red Bulls, Chicago Fire and the LA Galaxy and to be a part of a league that continues to grow so rapidly in this country. I am extremely thankful to everyone that has supported, inspired and guided me on and off the field throughout my time as a professional. I look forward to the next step in this journey as a spend time with my family and friends."
