Elgin church offers candlelight guided meditation on Sundays

First Congregational United Church of Christ's meditation and quiet reflection practice will begin from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at the church, 256 E. Chicago St. in Elgin. It will be offered every Sunday evening thereafter.

The lovingkindness meditation, rooted in Buddhist tradition, heals the mind from stress and calm the nervous system, promoting a positive attitude and an overall sense of individual peace.

In addition to the mental health benefits of meditation, a number of research studies have confirmed the physical health benefits of meditation such as reducing stress and tension, increasing energy, increasing blood flow, slowing heart rate, reducing depression, anxiety, anger and confusion, reducing pain and inflammation in the body, and increasing energy.
