No injuries in Mt. Prospect fire

A fire destroyed a plastic storage shed just outside a home in Mount Prospect Monday morning, but was contained before spreading into the home's attic, fire officials said.

Neighbors called in the blaze at 10:30 a.m. after seeing thick black smoke billowing from the shed and garbage cans outside a single-family, brick ranch home in the 100 block of Can Dota, Battalion Chief Randy Uidl said.

Fire officials believe the fire started in the garbage cans outside the wall of the garage and spread to the nearby shed before climbing up the side of the house and into the eaves.

"We were able to keep it out of the attic and the garage," Uidl said. "It looked a lot worse pulling up because of the black smoke from the burning plastics, but it didn't get up into the attic, so we were fortunate that way."

The homeowner was not home at the time. Nobody was injured. The home remains habitable. No damage estimates were available.
