WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University's board of trustees has approved a realignment program that will govern the future of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

The board's OK on Friday follows Indiana University trustees' endorsement earlier this month. The plan came from a legislative recommendation in 2016.

The realignment will occur July 1, 2018.

The proposal provides for Purdue to continue to manage and operate the Fort Wayne campus as it has since its beginning.

Purdue's nursing, medical imaging and dental education programs will be transferred to IU. That school manages the medical and social work programs on campus. Purdue will administer other academic programming.

Mike Berghoff is chairman of Purdue's board of trustees. He says a transition team will put the plan in action and deal with outstanding issues.
