20th anniversary of Shop with a Copy in Lake County

Monday marked the 20th anniversary of Lake County's first Shop with a Cop program.

Former Round Lake Park Police Chief Bruce Johnson introduced the program in 1996 and hosted 17 local children at the time. At its peak, the program hosted over 400 children in a single event with departments throughout the county and state participating. Since then, numerous departments have started their own programs for children in their communities.

Besides shopping for clothes and toys, kids have also enjoyed bowling, roller skating, movies and food for themselves and family members.

Monday's event, hosted by the Round Lake Park Police Department, welcomed 54 children to shop at the Wal-Mart in Round Lake Beach. Officers from Round Lake Heights, Round Lake, Deerfield, Chicago and the Lake County sheriff's office also participated.
