Giants activate halfback Vereen, release lineman Gettis

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - The New York Giants have activated halfback Shane Vereen off the injured reserve/designated for return list and terminated the contract of offensive lineman Adam Gettis.

The Giants announced the moves on Saturday, a day before meeting the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.

Vereen tore his triceps on Sept 25 against Washington. He was placed on injured reserve two days later and underwent surgery. Each NFL team is permitted to activate one player off injured reserve during the season.

Vereen is one of the NFL's best third-down backs. He had 59 catches for 494 yards and four touchdowns last season.

Gettis played in three games, starting at left guard two weeks ago against Cleveland. He was on the practice squad for the first two months of the season.
