Big 4th quarter carries Crystal Lake S. past Dundee-Crown

Crystal Lake South's boys basketball team's 27-point fourth quarter scoring binge propelled the Gators past Dundee-Crown in Fox Valley Conference action Saturday in Carpentersville.

South's offensive output in the last 8 minutes of play was one less than its point total in the first three quarters of the 55-46 win.

Five Gators scored in the quarter with juniors Kyle Leva and Jonathan Holloway leading the way with 10 points each in the frame.

"We just got more aggressive and started sharing the ball (in the fourth quarter)," said South coach Matt LePage. "We had a bunch of guys take big shots and making them. It was a lot of fun to watch and see it spread it around and making the shots with the game on the line."

"I think the fact that we were looking to distribute the ball and being very unselfish and that made a lot of opportunities for everyone," Holloway said about the fourth quarter surge.

Neither team played its best basketball in the first half.

South (4-4, 1-1) and D-C combined for only 4 baskets in the first quarter. South led 16-14 at halftime.

"I think both teams were ready to go defensively and it was just hard to get real quality shots for either team at first," LePage said. "But as the game went on, there was more flow and guys got more comfortable."

D-C (2-6, 1-2) started to show some offensive life in the third quarter.

The Gators effectively stymied the Chargers' inside game in the first half. D-C made minor changes during halftime and scored the first 6 points of the third quarter on short jumpers. A Gabriel Bergeron jump shot from the free throw line tied the game at 21-all two minutes into the quarter. The 6-foot-7 junior led all scorers with 23 points.

"We made just a little tweak here and there, nothing major," said Dundee-Crown coach Lance Huber. "I mean it was something we should have been doing. I just didn't feel that we're doing a very good job of it."

The Chargers took their first lead of the afternoon, 23-21 on a Jack Orndahl (12 points) jumper.

D-C led 31-28 at the start of the fourth quarter before Leva and Holloway took over.
