U of Illinois inks 10-year deal to buy energy from wind farm

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - The University of Illinois says it's contracting with the largest wind farm in the state to buy power for its Urbana-Champaign campus.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/2hnHnXZ ) that the agreement announced this week took effect Nov. 1 and continues for a decade - through October 2026. Under the deal the school will get 8.6 percent of the total wind-generated electricity from the Rail Splitter Wind Farm north of Lincoln in Tazewell and Logan counties.

UI officials say the campus received about 2,400 megawatt hours of wind power in November and they hope the annual amount will total more than 25,000 megawatt-hours.

The campus has a sustainability plan with clean-energy targets that include obtaining at least 120,000 mega-watt hours of power annually from low-carbon sources by fiscal year 2020.
