Streamwood's Williams hits 1,000 but Batavia prevails
Although the Streamwood girls basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 56-50 overtime game to Batavia Friday, it was still a memorable night for the Sabres.
Senior Jenejah Williams became the seventh Streamwood girls basketball player to score 1,000 points as a varsity Sabre.
Williams started the Upstate Eight River Conference game in Batavia 8 points shy of the mark.
The 6 foot 3 senior quickly scored 6 points in the first quarter but the last 2 were more elusive. She split a pair of free throws halfway through the second quarter to reach 999. Williams finally hit 1,000 on a baseline basket with 1:13 left in the half.
"Andrea (Bracy) got a steal and I came up with the ball and I took the right-hand layup. That was a nice way to get it," said Williams.
"She earned it. She works hard. She's been a starter for four years. It's a good honor for her to be able to join that group," said Streamwood coach George Rosner, whose team is now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the River. "And she will join the 1,000 rebound group pretty soon, too."
Williams finished the night with a team-high 23 points.
Hailey Orman finished with 15 points for Batavia including a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to send the game to OT. Geddy Rerko added 9 points for the Bulldogs (5-4, 2-1).
