Gritt helps Hersey improve to 8-1

Hersey kept its record perfect against Illinois girls basketball teams on Friday night in Arlington Heights.

The Huskies rolled to their eighth win in nine games with a 68-31 victory over visiting Elk Grove at the Ken Carter Gymnasium.

Hersey bounced back from its only loss last Saturday against St. Joseph of South Bend, In. at the Chicagoland Invitational Showcase at Fremd High School.

Senior Claire Gritt helped lead the way for coach Mary Fendley's squad scoring 18 points with 13 rebounds and 7 steals as Hersey raised its record to 2-0 in the Mid-Suburban East, tied for first with Rolling Meadows.

Senior guard Jenny Banak (10 points) and freshman guard Megan Murray (8) led Elk Grove (2-8, 0-2).

Senior Kelly Weyhrich (three 3-pointers) scored a game-high 19 points while Gina Miklasz (two 3-pointers) added 12 for the winners who outscored EG 24-2 in the second quarter.

Fremd 53, Conant 29: The Williams sisters helped lead Fremd (7-2, 2-0) in the Mid-Suburban West contest.

Senior Midori Williams led all scorers with 16 points and five 3-pointers while her twin sister Hayley was right behind with 15 points and three 3-pointers. Grace Tworek added 7 and Angie Zara 6 for the four-time defending MSL champs.

Junior Cate Fitzgerald led Conant (2-6, 1-1) with 11 points and senior Brittany Laskero added 8.

Prospect 56, Buffalo Grove 41: Junior guard Emily Frasco (15 points) and sophomore forward Mandy Withey (11) led Prospect (3-5, 1-1) in the MSL East triumph at the Jean Walker Field House in Mt. Prospect.

Prospect outscored BG 24-9 in the third quarter.

"We came out the second half with energy and focus and that lead to an impressive third quarter," said Knights coach Gabrielle Lovin. "It all started with our defense. It was a good win for us."

Freshman Kendra Lee (10 points), junior Alyssa Floro (9) and senior Megan Gamber (9) were top scorers for BG (4-4, 0-2).

Barrington 30, Palatine 26: Barrington (1-7) notched its first win of the season and evened its record at 1-1 in the MSL West as Tori Meyer scored a game-high 14 points.

Freshman Taylor Thompson added 6 points while Maggie O'Donnell and Cecilia Stack had 4 apiece.

Stack pulled led down a team-high 11 rebounds while O'Donnell had 2 assists.

"Tess Conforti did a great job off the bench," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "She gave us great help-side defensive. Cecilia Stack had some really good rebounds and Tori (Meyer) did a nice job producing offense."

Barreiro liked her team's effort.

"We got off to a bit of a slow start this season," she said. 'But it was because of a lack of effort. The kids played hard. I've been impressed with their resiliency."

Sydney Rzepka led Palatine (4-4, 0-2) with 7 points while Kacie Fillian, Reggie Much and Brittany Shapiro each had 5.

Schaumburg 78, Hoffman Estates 39: Schaumburg first-year coach Jacqie Storm secured her first win in the Mid-Suburban League as the Saxons jumped ahead 22-8 after one quarter and never looked back.

Mallory Gerber, coming off a career-high 32 points against Wheaton St. Francis, poured home 30 points with six 3-pointers.

Laura O'Connell added 13 points and Kayla Patterson 11 for the Saxons (3-6, 1-1).

Tayler Williams led Hoffman (1-7, 1-1) with 12 points while Kate Mongold added 10.
