Help an adult learn English with Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley is seeking volunteers to help adults learn English.

If you can help, you will want to attend the free tutor training workshop that will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 10-19, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. The next session will be Feb. 6-15.

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley provides texts, study material, and training so that anyone can be a tutor. You do not need to be fluent in another language or have a teaching background to help.

Volunteers meet with their students for one hour each week at a time and public location that is convenient.

To register for the January workshop, or a future workshop, visit www.lvfv.org or call Peg Coker at (630) 584-4428.

Between July 2015 and June 2016, Literacy Volunteers of Fox Valley had 216 volunteer tutors with 94 new tutors trained in that period. Eighty-two percent of the students gained one or more educational functioning levels for every 30 hours of instruction they received over the course of their enrollment. A Conversation Club also began with students meeting monthly with native speakers. The Literacy Volunteers of Fox Valley served 283 adults, with 5,945 hours of instruction given.
