Browns rookie Kindred breaks ankle during bye week

BEREA, Ohio (AP) - Browns rookie safety Derrick Kindred broke his ankle during the team's bye week and will miss the remainder of the season.

Coach Hue Jackson did not divulge how Kindred was injured, but said Wednesday that it was not from doing anything "malicious" and it does not change the way the team feels about the fourth-round draft pick from TCU.

Kindred made five starts and appeared in all 12 games. He's one of the few Cleveland rookies to stand out during a so-far winless season. Kindred was credited with 44 tackles (30 solo) and five defensed passes.

Jackson did not say who will replace Kindred.

The Browns also signed rookie defensive back Trae Elston, who originally signed with New Orleans and spent five weeks on Tampa Bay's practice squad.

Cleveland hosts Cincinnati on Sunday.
