Deadline nears to apply for eight $2,000 scholarships

A great education is a key factor in determining future employment opportunities. Yet, the cost of receiving higher education and a college degree goes up every year. That's why Consumers Cooperative Association, the sponsor for Consumers Credit Union ($960 Million; Waukegan, IL), created its scholarship program.

This year, the assocation is offering local students the opportunity to earn one of eight $2,000 scholarships. The deadline to apply in hopes of receiving one of this year's scholarships is 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31.

The $2,0000 scholarships are available for students scheduled to graduate high school in the spring of 2017. Applicants are evaluated on academic performance, financial need and leadership abilities, in addition to their involvement and activity within the local community.

"We understand that today's students are tomorrow's leaders," according to Julian Penny, President of Consumers Cooperative Association. "That's why we believe offering scholarships is one of the most important services the Association can provide."

Applicants and/or the parents/guardians must have been a CCU member for at least one year. Applications are available at area high schools, online at www.myconsumers.org, and at all CCU locations. Applications must include the student's official high school transcript through their junior year, a copy of their grades from the current academic year and a non-returnable photograph.

Applications must be received by 1 p.m. Dec. 31 to be considered.

"Consumers Credit Union applauds the Association's emphasis on their scholarship program," noted Sean M. Rathjen, CEO of the Member-owned credit union. "We believe every student should have an opportunity to reach their individual potential. Consumers Cooperative Association supports that belief by generously investing in local students and their pursuit of continued education."
