Indiana shooting details still unclear; officers identified

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - Police in a northern Indiana city where a 29-year-old man was killed said Tuesday that they are still trying to determine who fired the fatal shot - officers who were at the scene after a report of a nearby burglary or someone else.

Elkhart Police Chief Ed Windbigler said the two officers who heard gunshots early Sunday and then ran toward the sound and fired their own shots at a car in an alley were Sgt. Nathan Lanzen and Cpl. Leonard Dolshenko. The car crashed and Norman Gary died of a gunshot wound.

Both officers remain on paid administrative leave while the investigation is underway. Lanzen has been with the department eight years and Dolshenko seven years, the chief said.

Police Sgt. Chris Snyder said there's no indication that race played a role in the shooting. Gary was black and the officers are white. Snyder also said there's no indication the burglary report and gunshots were related.

State police have said ballistic tests to determine whether the fatal shot came from an officer's gun are expected to take at least several days.

A 22-year-old woman in the car with Gary was injured by gunfire along with two other people in the area. Snyder said no arrests have been made.

Elkhart police and city officials said they are not releasing any more information. Mayor Tim Neese urged anyone with information about the shooting to call police.
