Five suburban hospitals receive top Leapfrog award

Five suburban hospitals were among 10 in Illinois named to The Leapfrog Group's 2016 list of top hospitals, which assesses facilities based on the Leapfrog hospital patient safety survey.

The suburban hospitals named to the list include Amita Health Hoffman Estates; Elmhurst Memorial Hospital; Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, Geneva; Rush Oak Park Hospital; and Rush-Copley Medical Center, Aurora.

They join Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, Presence Saints Mary & Elizabeth Medical Center and University of Chicago Medical Center, all in Chicago; OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington; and Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney on the Leapfrog list.

The top hospital designation is given to hospitals that publicly report their performance using the Leapfrog survey and meet the organization's standards for factors such as includes infection rates, maternity care and a hospital's ability to prevent medication errors.

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers of health care.

"Hospitals that receive the Top Hospital distinction have demonstrated excellence at providing safe and high quality care," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

This year, 115 facilities were designated as top hospitals.
