BYU, Portland State to play in 2017 season opener

PROVO, Utah (AP) - BYU will open the 2017 season hosting FCS Portland State.

The schools announced Monday that the two programs will meet for the first time on Aug. 26, the season opener for both teams.

The game gives the Cougars a 13-game slate. NCAA rules allow BYU to schedule a 13th game prior to the normal Week 1 due to a scheduled road game in Hawaii.

The Vikings went 3-8 in 2016 after advancing to the second round of the FCS playoffs in 2015.

The Cougars went 8-4 in the first season under coach Kalani Sitake and will face Wyoming in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 21.
