Harper students lend a hand at Queen of the Rosary School

On Wednesday, Dec. 1, Harper College chemistry professor Julie Ellefson and her students provided a variety of hands-on learning experiences for Laura Ellefson's kindergarten class at Queen of the Rosary School in Elk Grove Village.

The college students and kindergartners, under the direction of Ms. Ellefson, explored the wonders of chemistry by making lava lamps from vegetable oil, water, food coloring and Alka-Seltzer. Next, the students concocted "slime" from a mix of polyvinyl alcohol, Borax, and a drop of food coloring. In a final demonstration, the children created shaving cream art by stirring drops of food color in shaving cream and transferring their colorful designs to index cards. The morning of kinder-collegiate exploration at the Elk Grove School proved to be an exciting learning experience for all.
