East St. Louis Township official pleads guilty to wire fraud

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - An East St. Louis Township official charged with spending more than $40,000 of township money on personal purchases has pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud charges.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/2gEMOxY ) East St. Louis Township Supervisor Oliver Hamilton told U.S. District Judge Michael Reagan on Thursday he plans to resign his position at the board meeting next week. He also was ordered to turn over that credit card and relinquish any control over township assets.

An investigation by the newspaper showed the 63-year-old Hamilton spent $230,000 on a township credit card between January 1, 2012, and June for various personal items, such as trips and gifts for his political allies.

Both sides recommended Hamilton be sentenced to a year and a day. He is scheduled to be sentenced March 1.
