Union contract extension means no Peoria bus disruptions

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - A union contract extension has averted possible immediate disruption of transit services in the Peoria area.

CityLink, or the Greater Peoria Mass Transit District, is amid contract negotiations with members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Workers Local 416. The contract with about 140 workers was to expire at midnight Wednesday. But the (Peoria) Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/2gI1RaP ) that CityLink officials said Tuesday afternoon that an agreed upon contract extension gives the parties until Jan. 31 to work out a deal.

Members of the union voted 104-0 on Sunday to authorize a strike, but union leaders said they hoped to avoid a walkout. Union officials have said health care and contract length are at issue.

CityLink serves Peoria, Peoria Heights and West Peoria. It also has contracts with Pekin and East Peoria.
