Ex-Aurora man gets 48-year term in ex-girlfriend's killing

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) - A DuPage County judge has sentenced a former Aurora man to 48 years in prison for the 2014 killing of his ex-girlfriend.

DuPage County prosecutors say Judge George Bakalis sentenced 38-year-old Jose Loera on Wednesday. Loera previously entered a plea of guilty to one count of first-degree murder in the death of 32-year-old Heather Jacobi of Aurora.

Authorities say Jacobi and Loera got into an argument March 28, 2014, that ended with Loera beating Jacobi and strangling her with a scarf.

Loera has been held in the DuPage County Jail since he was arrested on $5 million bond. He must serve the entire sentence before he is eligible for parole.
