CLC trustee elected to national committee
College of Lake County Trustee Amanda D. Howland of Lake Zurich was recently elected to the diversity committee of the Association of Community College Trustees for a two-year term.
The committee ensures leadership for the involvement of historically underrepresented diverse populations within the governance activities of ACCT and advises the board how to strengthen links with minority membership.
Howland has had an extensive career, first as a teacher of behavior disordered students, then as an elementary school administrator and now as an attorney and mediator practicing in the areas of civil rights and constitutional law. She earned her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology.
She was elected to a six-year term on the CLC Board of Trustees in April 2009, was re-elected in April 2015, and served as board chair for two years. She also serves as a liaison to the Illinois Community College Trustees Association Diversity Council.
CLC was named the winner of the ICCTA Diversity Award in June 2016. On Oct. 7, CLC received a national diversity award, the Charles Kennedy Equity Award at the 47th Annual ACCT Leadership Congress, recognizing the college's work advancing student success and diversity among students, faculty and staff.
Howland is a frequent community college conference presenter. Recently, she spoke about "Aligning Governance with Innovative Student Success Strategies" at the ICCTA conference.
At the ACCT Leadership Conference in October, she presented "Complete Career Pathway - High School to Health Professions" and "Aligning Governance with Innovative Student Success Strategies."
