St. Edward's Spagnola reaches 1,000 career points

St. Edward senior Maddie Spagnola had the best of both worlds this weekend.

On Friday night, Spagnola was in attendance at Westminster Christian to see her boyfriend of three years, Kelvin Cortez-Harvey, score his 1,000th career point for the Green Wave's boys basketball team.

Then on Saturday, Cortez-Harvey made the trip to Hinsdale South to witness Spagnola duplicate the feat.

The 5-foot-3 Green Wave guard scored 19 points in a 46-40 loss to Oak Park-River Forest to become the 14th player in Green Wave girls basketball history to score 1,000 points.

"It's pretty cool," Spagnola said of the milestone. "It's great that I was there last night to see (Cortez-Harvey) get it and then that he was here today for me."

Spagnola, who was named to the all-tournament team, surely would have eclipsed the 1,000 mark prior to Saturday had she not missed most of her sophomore season with a knee injury but Saturday's accomplishment wasn't diminished by that one bit.

"It means a lot to me," she said. "I've got such great teammates and coaches who always encourage me and it's means a lot to St. Ed's, too."

The Green Wave finished the tournament 2-3, playing all five games against Class 4A schools.

Maine West 49, Hampshire 30: Meagan Heine had 12 points and Rachel Dumoulin 8 for Hampshire in its loss to Maine West, which was the tournament champion at Hoffman Estates.

St. Charles North 45, Proviso West 38: Anna Davern scored 14 points to lead the North Stars to a win at the Hoffman Estates tournament.
