Christmas in the Valley highlights 19th-century style celebrations

Start the holiday season with the tradition and charm of an authentic 19th-century German-American Christmas.

The Schaumburg Park District's Christmas in the Valley is from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3 and Sunday, Dec. 4, at Merkle Cabin and Volkening Heritage Farm, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road.

"You can't help but get into the holiday spirit at this event," said Mary Rice, education coordinator. "There will be visits with St. Nicholas, traditional decorations and 19th-century holiday music. The whole atmosphere captures the scents and tastes of the holidays."

Visitors will sample foods, have the opportunity to buy homemade gifts and see farm chores completed. Also featured will be cookie decorating and crafts for kids. Hot drinks and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Cost is $3 or $12 per family of six or fewer. Additional family members are $3 each. Children age 3 and younger get for free.

Parking is available at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. Shuttle bus transportation to the farm will be available.
