Gritt gets career-best 34 for unbeaten Hersey

With senior Claire Gritt pouring home a career-high 34 points, Hersey's girls basketball team remained undefeated in the Buffalo Grove Bison Classic after a 77-23 triumph over Rich East in Arlington Heights.

Gritt tossed home seven 3-pointers (four in the first quarter and two in the second from 8 attempts) as the Huskies (3-0) raced to a 47-11 halftime lead in their own Ken Carter Gymnasium.

"Claire was hitting on all cylinders tonight,' said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. "Her passing and defense were equally impressive."

Gritt also had 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

Gina Miklasz reached double figures for Hersey with 10 points while Kelly Weyhrich handed out 9 assists and had 7 steals. Carly Silva and Carly Cooper each chipped in 6 points for the Huskies, who face Libertyville on Friday at 1 p.m. at Buffalo Grove High School.

Fenwick 61, Wheeling 47: Senior Melissa Claver recorded her fourth straight double-digit scoring game with a season-high 23 points and junior Nansy Velev added 9 for Wheeling, which stands at 2-1 in the Niles North tournament and 2-2 overall. Velev had two 2-pointers and Shannon Kennedy one.

Mother McAuley 68, Buffalo Grove 46: At Hersey, seniors Georgette Topalis (16 points) and Megan Gamber (12) were the top scorers for the Bison (1-2) in the third round of their own Bison Classic.

Maine South 54, Barrington 48 (OT): At Libertyville, sophomore guard Nicole Scales scored 16 points, including a 3-pointer in overtime, as the Hawks prevailed in the Buffalo Grove Bison Classic contest.

Fiona Spuria scored 6 of her 8 points in OT for Maine South (2-1). Barrington senior Claire Collier (11 rebounds) led all scorers with 18 points.

Senior Alex Van Ryne added 10 points, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots for the Fillies (0-3).

"Claire had a great game," said Barrington Babbi Barreiro. "And Alex had a very complete game for us at both ends of the floor.

"I feel like we are doing a lot of things right but we are not taking care of the basketball at pivotal times. We are getting better every game and if we keep progressing this way, we will be fine."

Lake Forest 48, Elk Grove 33: Lake Forest finished at 4-1 with the win over Elk Grove (1-4) in the final day of action for the Vernon Hills tournament.

The Scouts tied for first with Sycamore and Antioch, but Lake Forest won the tournament on the tiebreaker.

St. Charles East 51, St. Viator 41: Junior guard Myia Clark scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for the Lions (0-4), the only Class 3A team in the Schaumburg Thanksgiving Tourney.

Junior Olivia Solimene added 8 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists for Viator while classmate Maddie Fitzpatrick chipped in 6 points and 5 rebounds.

Elgin 42, Leyden 36: Juniors Pamela Colmenares and Serena Caraballo each scored 9 points for Leyden, which finished 2-2 in the Fenton/Addison Trail tournament.
