The Latest: Hopkins' miss makes it a dirty dozen PATs Sunday

So now it's a dirty dozen.
A record 12th failed extra-point attempt Sunday came at night, when Washington Redskins kicker Dustin Hopkins put one off the right upright in the fourth quarter against the Green Bay Packers.
There had never before been more than 10 blown PATs in a single NFL week during the Super Bowl era until this one day of pulls, hooks and blocks.
The point-after kicks were made more difficult last season, pushed back to the equivalent of a 35-yarder rather than 18.
Before Hopkins' error on a windy evening, Cincinnati's Mike Nugent and Robbie Gould of the New York Giants each missed two PATs, while Detroit's Matt Prater, Chicago's Connor Barth, Minnesota's Kai Forbath, Jacksonville's Jason Myers and Cleveland's Cody Parkey failed once apiece, as did New England's Stephen Gostkowski and Seattle's Steven Hauschka.

10 p.m.
A failed 2-point conversion try - on a day 11 extra points already had been flubbed around the NFL - after Robert "Fat Rob" Kelley's 10-yard TD run left the Washington Redskins with a 13-10 halftime lead against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.
The decision to go for 2 certainly left Redskins coach Jay Gruden open to second-guessing, especially when scat-back Chris Thompson was stuffed on a run up the middle.
Gruden might have been worried about the swirling wind at that end of the stadium. And he certainly knew the Redskins are using a backup long snapper signed a day earlier because of an injury to Nick Sundberg. Not to mention all the PATs gone awry Sunday.

9:30 p.m.
The never-ending debate over what, exactly, constitutes a catch - and what doesn't - lives on in the NFL.
Jordy Nelson caught a 13-yard TD pass from Aaron Rodgers in the second quarter of Green Bay's game at Washington on Sunday night, and a moment after the ball nestled into the receiver's arms, cornerback Josh Norman knocked it away.
The ruling on the field was a catch and a score, making it 7-all, and the call stood after a review.

8 p.m.
Russell Wilson threw for one touchdown and also caught a touchdown pass from Doug Baldwin as the Seattle Seahawks beat the Philadelphia Eagles 26-15.
In other late afternoon action, the Miami Dolphins rallied in the final minute to beat the Los Angeles Rams 14-10 and the New England Patriots beat the San Francisco 49ers 30-17.

A steady rain didn't damper the halftime ceremony for former 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo Jr., who received his Hall of Fame "Ring of Excellence" while everyone held umbrellas.
"I was told all these years I brought rain, thunder and lightning to this franchise, and I guess today proves it," he said.

6:05 p.m.
Jared Goff has had a quiet start to his NFL debut.
The No. 1 pick in the draft went 7 of 13 for 62 yards in the first half of his first start for the Los Angeles Rams. He didn't throw a touchdown pass or an interception, but handed off to Todd Gurley for the only score as the Rams took a 7-0 lead on Miami.
The Rams appeared to play it safe with Goff, calling plenty of short passing routes designed to minimize his exposure. He made a couple of good-looking throws and also escaped the pocket adroitly, but he also was sacked once by Cameron Wake when he held onto the ball a bit too long.
Goff didn't immediately fix the Rams' offense, which struggled yet again outside of two long runs by Gurley. But Los Angeles' defense has largely dominated the Dolphins, who have won four straight.

Russell Wilson has thrown for 186 yards and a touchdown as the Seattle Seahawks lead the Philadelphia Eagles 16-7 at halftime.
In the other late afternoon games, the New England Patriots lead the San Francisco 49ers 13-10 at halftime and the Los Angeles Rams are up 7-0 on the Miami Dolphins in the third quarter.

Making just his second NFL start, Seattle rookie C.J. Prosise set a bit of team history in the first quarter on Sunday.
Prosise took his second carry of the game 72 yards for a touchdown to give the Seahawks an early lead. His previous longest rush this season was a 10-yard run last week in his first start against New England.
It was the longest rush by a Seattle player since CenturyLink Field opened in 2002. The longest run in stadium history belongs to Chester Taylor, who had a 95-yard run in 2006 for Minnesota.

The number of failed extra-point attempts is up to 11 Sunday, the most in a single week during the Super Bowl era.
New England's Stephen Gostkowski missed and Seattle's Steven Hauschka had an extra-point attempt blocked in the late-afternoon games to bring the total to 11.
The previous high was 10 misses in a single week, but that was before the kicks were made more difficult. Starting last season, an extra-point attempt became the equivalent of a 35-yard kick rather than an 18-yard attempt.

What a view for National Baseball Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson on Sunday. After attending recent meetings, Idelson sought an opportunity to job shadow accomplished Bay Area team photographer Michael Zagaris.
That meant sporting a bright photo bib, carrying a camera and waiting in the tunnel for Tom Brady's long-awaited pregame run onto the field at Levi's Stadium for the Patriots quarterback's first road game against the 49ers team he grew up cheering in nearby San Mateo and at Candlestick Park.

Jameis Winston threw for 331 yards and a touchdown as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won 19-17 to pull within a game of the Falcons in the NFC South.
In other early games Sunday, the Minnesota Vikings capitalized on a 104-yard kickoff return from Cordarrelle Patterson and a 100-yard interception return by Xavier Rhodes in a 30-24 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Dak Prescott threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns in the Dallas Cowboys' 27-17 triumph over the Baltimore Ravens.
New York Giants rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to avoid an upset and beat the Chicago Bears 22-16. The Indianapolis Colts held off the Tennessee Titans 24-17. The Cleveland Browns remained winless by falling 24-9 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Buffalo Bills beat the Cincinnati Bengals 16-12. The Detroit Lions beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 26-19.

Jared Goff is making his NFL debut in highly unusual circumstances: It's raining in Los Angeles.
Rain began to fall about 90 minutes before kickoff at the Coliseum. Fans scurried up into the tunnels or donned ponchos while the players warmed up. The rain increased to a steady drizzle during pregame introductions, when Goff got the loudest cheers from the fans who had angrily chanted for his debut two weeks ago.
The Rams weren't immediately sure when they had last played a home game in the rain. They played in a dome in St. Louis after their 1994 departure from Anaheim, where it also hardly ever rains.

Leonard Floyd, the Chicago Bears' first-round draft pick from Georgia, was removed from the field on a stretcher with 5:53 to go against the Giants.
The entire Bears team and several Giants gathered around in a show of support. He pumped his fist and showed some movement while being carted off.
He has five sacks to lead all rookies.

NFL kickers have missed nine extra-point attempts in Sunday's early games, the most in a single week since the NFL pushed the kicks back.
Starting last season, an extra-point attempt became the equivalent of a 35-yard kick rather than an 18-yard attempt. The previous record for missed extra points since the rule change was eight in Week 13 last season.
Cincinnati's Mike Nugent and Robbie Gould of the New York Giants have each missed two extra-point attempts. Detroit's Matt Prater, Chicago's Connor Barth, Minnesota's Kai Forbath, Jacksonville's Jason Myers and Cleveland's Cody Parkey have missed one each.
Forbath had just replaced the ineffective Blair Walsh as Minnesota's kicker this week.
Barth and Gould were kicking in gusty winds in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Forbath, Myers and Prater all missed despite being indoors.

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Cody Kessler has been taken to the locker room with a concussion.
Kessler was being dragged down by linebacker Ryan Shazier when Lawrence Timmons rushed in and struck Kessler in the head with his shoulder. Timmons was penalized for unnecessary roughness.
Kessler pent several minutes on the ground before he was helped to the sideline. He was checked by medical personnel before leaving the field for further evaluation.
Josh McCown replaced Kessler.
Kessler has already missed one game with a concussion. He had to leave two other games with injuries.

NFL sacks leader Dee Ford has a hamstring injury and won't be returning to the Kansas City Chiefs' game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ford entered the day with 10 sacks.
Tampa Bay cornerback Brent Grimes has a quadriceps injury and also won't be returning.

NFL rushing leader Ezekiel Elliott had zero touches in the second quarter for Dallas against Baltimore's top-rated defense a week after having more than 200 yards from scrimmage against Pittsburgh.
Elliott had six carries for 26 yards in the first half, and one catch for minus-1 yard.
Dallas, which came in with the NFL's No. 1 rushing offense at 161 yards per game, had just 45 in the first half. Baltimore has the top-ranked rushing defense.

Jordan Howard has rushed for 72 yards as the Chicago Bears are surprising the New York Giants 16-9 at halftime.
The Giants are seeking their fifth straight victory.
The first half has ended in all the early games.
Indianapolis' Andrew Luck has thrown for 186 yards and two touchdowns to give the Colts a 21-7 lead over the Tennessee Titans. Dallas' Dak Prescott has thrown for 155 yards as the Cowboys are tied 10-10 with the Baltimore Ravens.
Minnesota has capitalized on a 100-yard interception return by Xavier Rhodes to grab a 20-17 lead over Arizona. The Kansas City Chiefs lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 10-9. The Cincinnati Bengals are up 12-10 over the Buffalo Bills, and the Jacksonville Jaguars are tied 9-9 with the Detroit Lions.

The Pittsburgh Steelers used all their allotted time in the first half - and then some - to score their first touchdown against the winless Browns.
Pittsburgh got two extra plays after the clock expired before Le'Veon Bell scored on a 1-yard run. The Browns were called for holding against defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun and then star cornerback Joe Haden was whistled for pass interference on Antonio Brown, giving the Steelers, who dominated the first half, two more cracks at a TD.
The Steelers ran 41 plays in the half to 17 for Cleveland, and held the ball for 20:37.
Pittsburgh then converted the 2-point conversion to take a 14-0 lead.

Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri's streak of consecutive field goals made ended Sunday at 44 when he missed a 42-yard field goal late in the first half.
He broke Mike Vanderjagt's previous NFL record of 42 during a win at Tennessee on Oct. 23.
Vinatieri, the NFL's oldest player at age 43, missed his first two field goal attempts in 2015, but made everything since Week 4 last season. He started the day 19 of 19 on field goals and 24 of 24 on extra points this season.
His first miss in 14 months also came on the day the Colts celebrated the 10-year anniversary of Indianapolis' first Super Bowl-winning team - a team Vinatieri played on.

Missed extra-point attempts continue to have a major impact in the early games.
Cincinnati's Mike Nugent has missed two kicks, Detroit's Matt Prater and Minnesota's Kai Forbath have each had extra-point attempts blocked. There now have been six missed extra-point attempts in the first half of Sunday's early games, including by both kickers in the Bears-Giants game at windy MetLife Stadium.

The Jacksonville Jaguars avoided having a dubious NFL record all by themselves.
Detroit Lions punt returner Andre Roberts failed to catch a punt late in the first quarter and Jacksonville's Ben Koyack recovered it after a bit of a scramble. Roberts later returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
The Jaguars didn't have a takeaway in the previous five games, tying five teams for the longest drought since the 1970 merger. They almost forced one on the first snap at Detroit when cornerback Jalen Ramsey ripped the ball away from Anquan Boldin, but a challenge didn't go their way.

The Cincinnati Bengals have announced that wide receiver A.J. Green is out for the remainder of the game against Buffalo due to the injury he suffered in the first quarter.
Green's right foot caught awkwardly as he tried to make a catch on Cincinnati's first pass of the game. He grabbed his right hamstring as he hit the ground.

Extra-point attempts are proving tricky in Sunday's early NFL action.
Chicago's Connor Barth and the New York Giants' Robbie Gould both missed extra-point attempts in the first quarter amid windy conditions in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Barth bounced back by kicking a 40-yard field goal later in the first quarter to give the Bears a 9-6 lead.
Cincinnati's Mike Nugent had an extra-point attempt hit the right upright, preventing the Bengals from tying their game with Buffalo. Nugent also hit the upright on his try after Cincinnati's second touchdown, leaving the Bengals ahead 12-10.

Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith started against the Detroit Lions a day after his brother's funeral.
Smith's brother, Brian Keith Moore, was shot and killed a week ago in their hometown of Valdosta, Georgia. Smith went home Monday and was excused from practices and meetings for much of the week. He rejoined his team Friday before leaving again to attend the funeral.
He made a tackle on the opening drive.

Cincinnati Bengals receiver A.J. Green has been carted off the field.
He got his right foot caught awkwardly as he tried to make a contested catch on Cincinnati's first pass of the game. Green grabbed his right hamstring as he hit the ground, and stayed down for several minutes. He was helped to the sideline and taken by cart to the locker room for examination.
Green has 66 catches on the season for 964 yards and four touchdowns.

The Minnesota Vikings will keep Alex Boone at left guard instead of making yet another shuffle on their banged-up offensive line.
After Jake Long became their fourth offensive tackle lost to a season-ending injury, the Vikings moved T.J. Clemmings from right tackle back to left tackle and reinserted Jeremiah Sirles as the starting right tackle for the game against Arizona. It's a lineup they have used in games this season, and coach Mike Zimmer elected to go back to that rather than make a more significant move.
Boone said this week that he would be open to moving to left tackle, which would have allowed Clemmings to stay at right tackle.

The NFL will finally get a look at the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft when quarterback Jared Goff takes the field for the Los Angeles Rams.
The Rams (4-5) are coming off a lackluster 9-6 win against the Jets, so coach Jeff Fisher decided it was time to see what Goff can do. He will be at home against a Miami team that has won four straight games and is now 5-4.
Elsewhere, Baltimore (5-4) visits Dallas (8-1) in a matchup of division leaders . The Cowboys have the NFL's top record while the streaky Ravens won three, lost four, then won two.
Other games worth highlighting: Philadelphia (5-4) is at Seattle (6-2-1), with both teams coming off impressive wins. Seahawks coach is looking for his 100th NFL win. The Eagles have scored at least 20 points in 11 straight games, the longest streak in the league. And Tampa Bay (4-5) plays at Kansas City (7-2) and the Buccaneers have won four straight in the series. The Chiefs are tied for the AFC's best record and lead the NFL with a plus-14 turnover margin.
