Lake in the Hills hires new village administrator

Lake in the Hills has hired a new village administrator to replace Gerald Sagona who was placed on administrative leave and resigned after nearly 20 years on the job.

Douglas Petroshius, assistant village manager in Lincolnwood for the past eight years, will fill the post starting Dec. 12.

Assistant Village Administrator Jennifer Clough has been serving as interim village administrator since Sagona's departure.

"We had 46 applicants overall," said Village President Paul Mulcahy adding, at least 30 of those applicants had lots of experience and "could have done this job."

The village board interviewed 11 of those candidates and Petroshius made the final four.

"All four of them were outstanding. (Doug) just stood out," Mulcahy said. "He's excited. We're excited. It's a great new page for the village."

The village board recently authorized Petroshius' employment agreement, which includes an annual salary of $140,000, a $375 monthly car allowance instead of expense reimbursement for local travel within a 50-mile radius, and a $50 monthly stipend for cellphone usage.

Petroshius, 37, of Waukegan, graduated from Libertyville High School in 1997. He has a bachelor's degree in political science from Western Illinois University and a master's degree in public administration with an emphasis in urban management from Northern Illinois University.

He served as intern for the towns of Wauconda, Round Lake Beach, Mount Prospect, and Clarendon Hills. In 2004, he became the public works management analyst for the Village of Lincolnwood and was promoted to assistant to the village manager in 2006. As assistant village manager since 2008, he was responsible for overseeing human resources, information technology, and special projects.

Petroshius also is credentialed by the International City/County Management Association. He has a wife, Kristine, and two sons, Jackson and Thomas.

His contract will be up for renewal in 2017 after Mulcahy's term is up, per the agreement. The village might renew the agreement for the four-year term of the next village president.
