Aurora gang member sentenced for firing weapon

Gabriel G. Martinez, 23, of the 0-99 block of South Lincoln Avenue in Aurora, agreed Wednesday to a sentence of 9½ years in exchange for a guilty plea to a charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm, according to a news release issued Friday.

During the plea hearing, Kane County Assistant State's Attorney Salvatore LoPiccolo said that Martinez fired multiple shots from a handgun while he was riding in a car.

The shooting took place about 8:30 p.m. on July 18, 2015, on the 200 block of Beach Street in Aurora. The intended target was not injured.

Martinez, who must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence, was given credit for 486 days in the Kane County jail, where he had been held since his arrest in lieu of $1 million bail.
