Schaumburg teachers take stance against drug abuse

Teachers and administrators at Schaumburg High School are taking a preventive approach to learn about an issue many communities across the country are facing today - drug abuse.

The Schaumburg Police Department is presenting sessions titled "From Use to Abuse: Drugs in Our Community." Teachers at Schaumburg High School are participating in two professional development sessions to increase awareness about prescription drug and heroin abuse.

"Recently, Schaumburg High School teachers have dedicated time to learning about local drug trends and signs of abuse in order to promote necessary awareness in a world and community that are ever-changing," said Enrico Matarazzo, assistant principal at Schaumburg High School.

"Knowing these things, conversations also continued about how to support our students in hopes of keeping the Schaumburg High School 'family' and facility healthy and safe."

As teens in the surrounding communities are impacted by addiction and overdose, administrators believed it was time to start educating staff about recent trends, what signs to look for, and how to handle students who might be fighting a drug addiction.

Teachers are learning about what they need to know to support teens and prevent them from going down a dangerous yet increasingly prevalent path.
