Family honors World War II veteran from Hampshire

Robert Collins was both proud and speechless Sunday as family and friends honored him for his service in World War II.

During a surprise gathering at his Hampshire home, the 91-year-old Army veteran was presented with an encased flag, a plaque and a World War II flag to fly outside his house.

In the eyes of his nephew, Richard Collins, there's no one more deserving of the recognition.

"We are so proud to have you in our lives," he told his uncle.

Robert Collins, who is also a Purple Heart recipient, served under Gen. George Patton in the 28th Infantry Division starting in January 1944. His time overseas was cut short later that year, however, when he was seriously injured in combat in Germany.

Collins' daughter, Linda Horne of St. Charles, said her dad rarely spoke of his Army career when she and her two siblings were growing up. He has always been quiet, patient and laid back, said his wife, Ruth Collins, who adds, "He needs a Medal of Honor for living with me."

It wasn't until Collins, who was also a farmer, started getting older that he began unveiling more information about his time overseas, his family said.

With plans to celebrate Ruth Collins' 88th birthday Sunday, Richard Collins, who is a Vietnam War veteran himself, said he got the idea to also honor his uncle while the whole family came together.

"I know what he went through," he said. "I think it's been way too long. He should've been recognized a long time ago."

Steve and Shirley Kranz, who honor veterans and first responders throughout the area, presented the flags as symbols of the country's gratitude. Loved ones thanked Collins individually for the sacrifices he made for his country and for his dedication to his family.

"He has always been a good dad, and he always provided for us really well," Horne said. "He's pretty special."
