App reviews: Qiktionary, Brain It On!

Qiktionary

Do you pride yourself on being a wordsmith? Try Qiktionary, a game made by the same people as the British quiz show "QI," which will test your wits and your words with a simple but devilish formula. Players start with four blank spaces, which they have to fill in with any four-letter word. Once a word is submitted, the game will tell you how many letters in that word are also in the goal word. Use that knowledge to work your way through the puzzle, but be careful: You have a limited number of guesses before going "over par." There are single-player and multiplayer versions of the game, in case you want to clue other word nerds.

This is a subscription-based game, so if you want to play beyond what's offered in the free trial, it will cost you 99 cents a month. The app also offers $3.99 subscriptions for three months or an annual subscription of $12.99. A subscription also gets you access to future content.

Free, for iOS and Android.

Brain It On!

Brain It On! is a fun physics-based game that allows players to tap their creativity and critical thinking. Okay, that may not make the game sound that enticing. But if you like to have your gray matter tickled and your wits challenged, then it really is a great choice for you. The game is pretty straightforward: Players are presented with a challenge and have to draw objects on the screen to solve the challenge. For example, you may be asked to knock over a cup, using only objects that you draw.

You can tackle that in any number of ways - dropping a well-placed weight from the sky, using balls and a ramp, etc. Players are scored based on how quickly and how efficiently they solve puzzles, meaning that you get more points if you can get your solution with fewer objects. (Sorry, Rube Goldberg.) The free version has plenty of puzzles, but you can buy more for $3.99. Or, if you just want to ditch ads, you can do that for 99 cents.

Free, for iOS and Android.
