Wauconda Fire District members recognized for emergency efforts

On Oct. 18, members of the Wauconda Fire District were presented an award at Lake Forest Hospital. The Emergency Medical Services' "A Cut Above - 2016" Award was presented for an incident that occurred on July 15.

A male subject had fallen out of a row boat while fishing. His friend was able to hold on to him but unable to pull him back into the boat. The boat was approximately 100 yards from shore and, upon the fire district's arrival, the subject in the water was unconscious.

The initial crew immediately entered the water and swam to the patient. The patient was moved to the nearest shore, which was in an area not accessible by an ambulance or crews. CPR was initiated while waiting for a rescue boat to arrive.

When the rescue boat arrived with personnel and equipment, ALS procedures began and the patient was moved by boat to an ambulance. ALS procedures continued and the patient was transported to Good Shepherd Hospital.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient had a pulse and an airway had been established. Though efforts were successful early on, the patient later passed away at the hospital with his family by his side.

The quick actions and response of the crew gave the patient the best possible chance for survival. Only 20 minutes passed from the time of the call to the time the patient was in the ambulance.

Though the outcome was ultimately tragic, at no time was there a lack of effort by those involved. The Wauconda Fire District was assisted by the Lake Zurich Fire Department and the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
