Activities, projects, assembly mark anti-bullying week at Hale

Defend, Accept and Include was the theme for Hale Elementary School's recent Anti-Bullying Week, which was reinforced with various activities and projects, spirit days, displays throughout the building, an anti-bullying skit created and performed by the student ambassadors, and an assembly entitled Challenge U. This interactive experience challenged students to be the best person they could be, standing up to unkind behaviors and choosing to do what was right even if others were not.

Before school each morning, the students were greeted with music that focused on friendship and acceptance. Throughout the week classroom teachers engaged their students in various activities. They read and analyzed the poem "The Promise" and signed a poster-sized and individual version of it.

Students chose one of three sports shoes to decorate and complete with a positive message about how they would take a stand against bullying. In addition, each student wrote a message on a classroom paper chalkboard entitled I HOPE. The messages were about individual hopes for themselves, family, community and country in terms of being kind to and respectful of others.

Grade level teams planned a special art project based on a book or the theme about acceptance and standing up to bullying and honoring individuality. The poster size poem, art projects and sports shoes were all hung in the hallway outside classrooms. Art, music, physical education and library media teachers also planned age-appropriate activities for the students around the theme "Defend, Accept and Include."
