Four women injured in pileup outside Elgin

Four women, including one who was flown to a hospital, were injured Thursday morning in a four-vehicle chain reaction crash along Route 20 west of Elgin.

The initial investigation indicates a 2013 Kia Sorrento driven by Monica Villanueva, 24, of Elgin, was eastbound about 7 a.m. on Route 20 when it crashed into the rear of a 2014 Mercedes C300 that was stopped at Coombs Road, Kane County Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said.

That caused the Mercedes to rear-end a 2014 Honda Odyssey, which in turn rear-ended a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder.

Villanueva suffered serious injuries and was flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. The driver of the Mercedes, Gina LePorte, 32, of Pingree Grove, suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

A witness said the sun's glare made it difficult to see stopped traffic, Gengler said.

The sheriff's office and the Kane County accident reconstruction team are investigating the crash, and no tickets have been issued.

Route 20 was closed between Coombs Road and Switzer Road for about 3½ hours while the crash was investigated.
