Vernon Hills school treats veterans to appreciation breakfast

About 60 military veterans and their families attended a breakfast of appreciation Thursday at Hawthorn Middle School South in Vernon Hills.

It marked the 16th year the school has honored veterans with a meal served by members of the school's student council, according to Principal Robert Natale.

Students from the band, orchestra and choir performed songs as the vets ate in the school's cafeteria.

After the performances, the kids sat down for some one-on-one time with veterans to learn more about their lives as soldiers.

It's one of several events being held this week throughout the suburbs to celebrate Veterans Day, which is today.
