Books Between Bites honors 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor

Batavia's popular monthly noontime book program, Books Between Bites, welcomes Dan Hoefler on Thursday, Nov. 17, for a special program remembering the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. He will discuss the book "At Dawn We Slept: The Untold Story of Pearl Harbor" by Gordon W. Prange.

The program will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. The public is invited to attend this free program and registration is not required.

The book provides a brilliant re-creation of the thoughts and personalities of the officers on both sides who fought at Pearl Harbor, and adds details to what was previously known about the American side. Failures of imagination, excessive adherence to routine, poor coordination and communication, and bad luck contributed to the debacle.

Hoefler, a retired Oswego High School history and government teacher, has served on the Batavia City Council, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the Batavia Historical Society board.

People are invited to bring their lunch and eat as they enjoy the program and discussion. Lunch items, beverages and baked goods can be purchased at Chapters Coffee House & Café, located just inside the library and adjacent to the meeting room. To preorder for pickup just before the program, call (630) 406-8005. Parking is available in the lot just south and adjacent to the library.

On Dec. 15, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke, the very first presenter at the first Books Between Bites program, presents his 30th program. The series continues Jan. 19, 2017, with a book review by the Rev. Cynthia Anderson of Batavia United Methodist Church. Feb. 16 is time to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Route 66, with author Susan Croce Kelly and he two books on this famous highway. Sports fans will enjoy the return of ESPN's Lester Munson March 16. Longtime presenter Rick Kogan of the Chicago Tribune and WGN Radio returns April 20. The season concludes with a very special guest, author Amy Dickinson, who write the nationally-syndicated advice column "Ask Amy" and is also a frequent panelist on NPR's "Wait Wait … Don't Tell Me!"

Books Between Bites was established in Batavia in 1987 by the late Lee C. Moorehead. The program has been continued by Moorehead's wife, Betty, and his daughter, Becky Hoag, in partnership and cosponsorship with George H. Scheetz and Stacey Peterson of Batavia Public Library.
