Woodland Remembers Veterans on November 11

Gurnee--Woodland Community Consolidated School District schools will be in session on Veterans Day, November 11, 2016.

While all five schools are in session, activities will be held so students will have the opportunity to reflect and understand the significance of this day.

"We believe it is important to take time to recognize all of those who served honorably in the military during war and peace. Their contributions, their bravery help to shape our country and we need to show our appreciation, said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joy A. Swoboda.

The "Hall of Military Heroes" will be on display at each school, featuring photos and information about those employees or family members who have served or are serving in any branch of the military in an active duty, reserve or National Guard unit.

A sampling of activities taking place at each school includes:

Woodland Middle School:

A Vietnam veteran helicopter pilot will visit Melissa Amerine's sixth grade social studies classes on Friday at 8 a.m., 8:54 a.m., 9:48 a.m., and 12:23 p.m.

A continental breakfast for invited veteran family members and others will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Student leaders will welcome the veterans and mingle.
