Arlington Heights man charged with slapping a child

An Arlington Heights man who prosecutors say chased and slapped an 11-year-old boy was ordered held on $50,000 bail Wednesday.

Richard Tannous, 29, was charged with aggravated battery to a child, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Probation is also an option.

Prosecutors say Tannous was driving near Lyndon Avenue and Carol Court in Rosemont about 6 p.m. Oct. 20 when a ball struck his car.

Tannous left his car and chased the 11-year-old - who was playing with a friend - into a nearby alley, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Maureen McGee.

The boy ran behind a trash bin, where Tannous grabbed him by his sweater, pushed him against the wall and threw him to the ground, said McGee, who did not say what kind of ball struck the vehicle.

McGee said Tannous slapped the boy's face and threatened, "I will break your legs if I ever see you again."

Rosemont police arrested Tannous Tuesday after the boy called to tell them he spotted Tannous in the area.

Tannous received supervision for DUI in 2014, McGee said. He next appears in court on Dec. 1.
