District 57, 59 voters end layer of government

Voters in two school districts in Elk Grove Township agreed Tuesday to eliminate a little-known layer of government.

Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 and Mount Prospect Elementary District 57 are among 99 school districts in Cook County that have associated township trustees of schools and treasurers who are responsible for managing and overseeing the districts' investments. School officials say they already handle many of the functions in house with their business offices, and can easily take over the remaining responsibilities.

According to unofficial results, voters in District 59 agreed to abolish those positions 9,964 to 8,750 votes, while voters in District 57 agreed 5,907 votes to 3,220 votes.
