Infant killed in Barrington Hills crash

A 5-month-old girl was killed in a series of car crashes in Barrington Hills Thursday evening that left several other people injured.

Barrington Hills police said the girl was one of four passengers in a 2010 Dodge Journey that collided with a 2001 Ford pickup just before 7 p.m. in the intersection of Route 25 and Silverstone Drive on the village's far western edge.

The infant was transported to Sherman Hospital in Elgin where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be performed, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said.

The driver of the 2010 Dodge was a 32-year-old woman from Carpentersville, police said. She was also transported to Sherman with injuries that were considered nonlife-threatening. Also in the 2010 Dodge were two other children, ages 8 and 13, who were transported to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates with serious injuries, according to police.

The driver of the pickup, a 23-year-old man from Carpentersville, was transported to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin where he was treated and released.

Authorities said the woman was driving north on Route 25 and the man was driving south when the crash occurred in the intersection. Investigators said they don't know yet if one of the drivers crossed into oncoming traffic or was attempting a turn onto Silverstone.

Additionally, police said the fatal crash caused a second crash involving three other vehicles, all headed south on Route 25.

In the second crash, two of the three drivers were transported to local hospitals for minor injuries where they were treated and released, according to authorities.

Police have yet to release the names of anyone involved in the crashes. Both crashes remain under investigation by Barrington Hills police and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team. No citations have been issued so far, police said.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed any of the crashes to call (847) 551-3006.
