Woman charged with mailing fatal overdose of heroin to friend in Darien

A New Jersey woman has been charged in DuPage County with mailing heroin to a friend in Darien that resulted in a fatal overdose.

Judge Daniel Guerin issued a $750,000 arrest warrant for Amanda Guarneri, 24, who is charged with drug-induced homicide and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance in the death of 26-year-old Dane Carver, also of New Jersey.

Prosecutors say Carver was staying at a Darien hotel while in the area for work this summer. On Aug. 8, Carver's co-workers asked hotel staff for a well-being check when he failed to show up for work. Hotel staff found Carver unresponsive and called police.

Prosecutors say Guarneri mailed Carver several packets of heroin laced with fentanyl, and he ingested the heroin and died from a drug overdose.

Earlier in the day, prosecutors filed charges of drug-induced homicide against two West Chicago residents accused of selling a fatal dose of heroin in a separate case.

"If that isn't an epidemic, I don't know what is," DuPage State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "This must end."

Guarneri is in custody in Suffolk County jail, New York, awaiting extradition to DuPage County.
