Girls volleyball: Sectional semifinals next for postseason survivors

The girls volleyball season continues with tough postseason tests as sectional play resumes on Tuesday night at Glenbrook South, Lakes and Woodstock high schools.

Fremd and Prospect will meet in a Class 4A semifinal at Glenbrook South, while Palatine travels to the Lakes 4A sectional and will face Libertyville in the semifinal.

St. Viator makes the trip west to Woodstock to face Carmel in a Class 3A semifinal

At Glenbrook South: Mid-Suburban League champion Fremd is making its first appearance in a sectional since 2009 against a Prospect club which last won a regional in 2003.

The No. 10 seeded Vikings (29-8) and No. 6 Knights (26-11) will face off in the second semifinal (scheduled for 6:30 p.m.) following No. 1 Loyola and No. 5 Niles West who serve off at 5:30 p.m.

Fremd advanced with a 25-19, 25-23 triumph over No. 2 Hersey in the Evanston regional.

Ysabel Lee and Bailey Hooker each put down 8 kills and Sara Ganas had 4 to lead the Vikings to their sixth regional crown under coach Curt Pinley, who won his 400th match in the program two weeks ago.

Prospect won its first regional since 2003 and seventh in school history.

Behind a school-record 10 kill blocks by junior Meghan Meredith, coach Laura Gerber's Knights defeated No. 3 Glenbrook South 25-18, 20-25, 25-15 for the championship of the Hoffman Estates regional.

Senior Maggie Porwit had 7 blocks and 3 kills for Prospect and classmate Mary Mazurek had 7 kills.

At Lakes: No. 4-seeded Palatine (32-5) which was second in the MSL West to Fremd, 32-5) is making its 12th appearance in a sectional and first since 2012.

Coach Dan Gavin's Pirates reached the semifinal with a 25-19, 25-16 win over No. 5 Lakes (25-11) in the Waukegan regional championship and will take on top-seeded Libertyville at 5:30 p.m.

No. 2 Stevenson faces No. 14 Deerfield in the 6:30 p.m. semifinal.

Rhode Island-bound Claire Chaplinsky (12 kills), Brooke Bauer (5) and Haley Holz (3) led Palatine to its regional title over Lakes. Senior setter Sydney Christiansen handed out 22 assists (she has more than 2,500 for her career).

Memphis-bound Alyssa Kronberg led the back row with 13 digs while Chaplinsky had 10. Beverly Ryan led the Pirates with 4 blocks.

At Woodstock: For the second straight year, St. Viator plays in the Woodstock sectional.

The Lions advanced by defeating Regina in its own regional championship match.

Coach Charlie Curtin's squad is the fifth team in school history to win a regional. They prevailed 25-19, 18-25, 25-12.

The No. 3 Lions will face No. 2 Carmel in the 6:30 p.m. semifinal that will follow the 5:30 p.m. semifinal between Marian Central vs. Resurrection.

Junior Catherine Hickey (12 kills), junior Kendall Claffey (9). junior Michaela Mueller (5) and senior Katie Kerrigan (5) led the Lions attack vs. Regina.

Mueller handed out 27 assists while sophomore Carrie Leazer had 23 digs and Kaylee Liberty 11.

At Westminster Christian: Schaumburg Christian takes on St. Benedict in the 6:30 p.m. semifinal which follows the 5:30 semifinal between Faith Lutheran and Morgan Park.

Schaumburg Christian won its second straight Class 1A regional title by defeating host North Shore Country Day School (Winnetka) 25-12, 25-13.

Schaumburg Christian coach Alice Cummings is 42-17 in two years and 13 of the losses are 3A and 4A programs.
