Tiny room is cramped with big furniture

We have two special needs kids with no time or money to update. Our couch is broken and we made a computer desk out of two-by-fours.

Our living room is so small we don't know what to do to make it more functional and organized. Thank you for considering us for the makeover.

Budget: $10,000 plus

The family room contains overstuffed furniture that is larger scale. The furniture could be condensed to allow for extra seating by using a small-scale sectional. Adding a functional piece would allow you to store the kids' toys and hide some of the clutter. Using closed end tables will also allow for additional hidden storage.

Suggestions:

• Add a sectional that is proportionate to the scale of the room and a TV stand with closed storage.

• Add end tables for lighting and additional storage. A functional desk for the kids to do homework could coordinate with the other accent pieces.

• The room needs a small task-lighting lamp to complement the look and a large piece of art for above the sectional to add color and excitement into the casual space.

• The area rug is plush and I left the floor space open for the kids to play on the floor and enjoy the space. A cocktail ottoman can be added for "kick your feet up and relax" moments. It could have storage for blankets and other items.

A Steinhafels designer suggests this room layout with a smaller sectional.
