Women's volleyball: Harper nets regional championship

Harper's women's volleyball team won the regional championship on Saturday and will represent its region in the NJCAA national tournament in Rochester, Minn., on Nov. 11 and 12.

The No. 1-ranked team in Division III, Harper defeated No. 2 Madison 26-24, 21-25, 25-14, 24-15 as the Hawks (40-1) placed Katelyn Sommers, Kayla Mayer and Ellie Burzlaff on the all-tournament team.

Coach Bob Vilsoet was named all region Coach of the Year.

Sommers, Mayer, Burzlaff, Kathryn Novy and Sarah Udoni were all-region selections.

Leading the Hawks on attack Saturday against Madison was Burzlaff with a career-high 18 kills. She was followed by Udoni (11), Marielle Lugo (10) and Novy (10).

Udoni (7) and Novy (4.5) led in blocks while Mayer had 35 digs followed by Sommers (14) and Ariana Chelini (13).

Sommers handed out 50 assist directing the offense.

Harper defeated the College of DuPage 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 in the semifinals.
