Man dies in Kane County car accident, 8-year-old son survives

A Plano man is dead and his 8-year-old son is hospitalized after their car crashed into a tree at 5:10 a.m. Saturday on Jericho Road, near Mighell Road, in unincorporated Sugar Grove Township.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, but Kane County Sheriff's Police believe speed may have been a factor.

Police say Esteban Velazquez, 31, was heading west on Jericho Road, west of Route 47, when he drove his 2007 Mercury Montego off the road and onto the westbound shoulder. Then he re-entered the road, went across it, and the car spun into a large tree. Firefighters had to extricate both Velazquez and his son, who was in the back seat, from the vehicle.

Velasquez was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove where he was pronounced dead. Velazquez's son was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora with serious but not life-threatening injuries, police said.

Both Velasquez and his son were wearing seat belts, police said.

A portion of Jericho Road was closed for five hours as the crash was being investigated.
