Chicago man dies after weekend crash near Burlington

A Chicago man injured last weekend in a crash near Burlington has died, authorities said Thursday.

Chester Buford, 20, was the passenger in a Ford Focus that crashed into a utility pole along Plank Road about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the Kane County sheriff's office.

A preliminary investigation shows the car was heading west on Plank Road near Lawrence Road when it attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone, officials said.

The driver, 21-year-old Ryan Kennedy of Chicago, swerved to avoid hitting an oncoming vehicle that was traveling east, authorities said. The car left the south side of the road, hit the utility pole and rolled onto its side.

Buford was flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where he died Wednesday, sheriff's officials said. Kennedy was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Officials have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation. No tickets have been issued as of early Thursday.
