Boys soccer: Bryk finishes twice in Fenton win over Hampshire

Like a forward strives to do, Patryk Bryk finishes.

The Fenton senior certainly didn't want to finish playing high school boys soccer at Tuesday's Class 2A St. Francis sectional semifinal against Hampshire, so he tallied a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes to help the Bison blank the Whip-Purs 3-0.

"Our captains gave us some positive feedback and the motivation we needed for this game, and it made an impact," Bryk said. "This is the first time we've gone this far, so we wanted this one. We all like each other and play for each other and wanted to win."

Bryk wasted little time, giving the Bison a boost just three minutes into play, taking a ball from Angel Barriga and slipping it past Hampshire goalkeeper Jason Polletta.

"Usually the team that scores first wins. There's a huge percentage of that," Fenton coach Jim Johns said. "It's imperative to start off with energy and (the Whip-Purs) did too. They had an opportunity, but we were able to snuff it out."

Fenton (9-10-3) extended its lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute as Bryk basically duplicated something he did in the regional title win against Marmion.

"There was a cross and I thought the ball was slippery," Bryk said. "I had a pretty good shot and in the previous game I had a similar shot. Coach said to picture where the goal is and just shoot it, so that's what I did."

Hampshire (13-7-3) didn't have a lot of scoring chances, but it peppered a handful of shots in the first half, but nothing that resulted in a celebration.

"That free kick we took early, if he puts that in that gives us more life," Hampshire coach John Gosling said. "A couple shots skip off the turf and if the keeper bobbles it like he did, maybe we get it in. It just didn't fall."

The Bison really made especially it difficult on the Whip-Purs when senior Alioune Mbaye assisted freshman Sebastian Palacios in the 34th minute for a 3-0 lead.

With the victory Fenton advances to Saturday night's title game against Benet, a team it just lost to 3-2 on Oct. 11.

As for Hampshire, its season comes to a close and marks the end for 13 seniors.

"You never want it to end, but it does end sometimes," Gosling said. "It's tough to put a positive spin on the night. I just thanked all the seniors for all the hard work they put in."
